Plot: The demon Lilith has been destroyed and Jace has been freed from her captivity. But when the Shadowhunters arrive to rescue him, they find only blood and broken glass. Not only is the boy Clary loves missing–but so is the boy she hates, Sebastian, the son of her father Valentine: a son determined to succeed where their father failed, and bring the Shadowhunters to their knees.
No magic the Clave can summon can locate either boy, but Jace cannot stay away—not from Clary. When they meet again Clary discovers the horror Lilith's dying magic has wrought—Jace is no longer the boy she loved. He and Sebastian are now bound to each other, and Jace has become what he most feared: a true servant of Valentine's evil. The Clave is determined to destroy Sebastian, but there is no way to harm one boy without destroying the other. Will the Shadowhunters hesitate to kill one of their own?Only a small band of Clary and Jace's friends and family believe that Jace can still be saved — and that the fate of the Shadowhunters' future may hinge on that salvation. They must defy the Clave and strike out on their own. Alec, Magnus, Simon and Isabelle must work together to save Jace: bargaining with the sinister Faerie Queen, contemplating deals with demons, and turning at last to the Iron Sisters, the reclusive and merciless weapons makers for the Shadowhunters, who tell them that no weapon on this earth can sever the bond between Sebastian and Jace. Their only chance of cutting Jace free is to challenge Heaven and Hell — a risk that could claim any, or all, of their lives.
And they must do it without Clary. For Clary has gone into the heart of darkness, to play a dangerous game utterly alone. The price of losing the game is not just her own life, but Jace's soul. She's willing to do anything for Jace, but can she even still trust him? Or is he truly lost? What price is too high to pay, even for love?
Darkness threatens to claim the Shadowhunters in the harrowing fifth book of the Mortal Instruments series.
My Review: For me, the fifth instalment to The Mortal Instruments series, City of Lost Souls is the most highly anticipated book of the year. For those of you who haven't read this book I will make this easy for you- RUN AND GO GET IT NOW! YOU WILL NOT REGRET THIS!
The Mortal Instruments is one of my favourite series of all time. I'm not kidding, it's just that awesome. I've read and brought the whole series and when I saw this book sitting on the shelves at the book store, I immediately brought it without a second thought. This book, like the rest of the series, does not disappoint! Well, what can I say? Who can resist Jace's witty lines?
City of Lost Souls is full of surprises- the good kind. Jace is now bound to Sebastian; whatever happens to Sebastian, happens to Jace and vice versa. Sadly, Jace just isn't the same Jace we fell in love with in the previous books as he is controlled by Sebastian. Poor Clary, as she finds out that the Clave aren't doing enough, she takes matters into her own hands.
The characterization is amazing; all the characters are so real and believable. Clary and Jace are just one of the reasons why I love this book. Their love for each other was so sweet. Trust me, there are many adorable scenes that will make you grin from ear to ear. And did I mention the sexual tension? No? Well, there's lots of that too!
I loved reading about the relationship between Simon and Isabelle, Maia and Jordan. It really made me smile. And let's not forget about Alec and Magnus Bane! I've always loved Magnus's quirky sense of humour and witty comments. He's so cute. One aspect that made the story even more realistic was Alec's insecurity about their relationship. I almost fainted with how things turned out with them.
And just when I thought Sebastian couldn't get any eviler…he does. Trust me, he does, you'll hate him. Another character I really started not liking is Jocelyn, yes, Clary's mother. I completely get that she's trying to protect her daughter but in my opinion she's not doing a very good job at it.
Cassandra Clare is an amazing author. I absolutely adore all her books. The Infernal Devices anyone? It's always beautifully written, full of suspense, mystery and romance. The premise itself was captivating; I was engrossed in the book to the very end.
Also, I can't stop thinking about the similarities of Jace and Will from The Infernal Devices! The fact that they both despise ducks absolutely cracked me up!
I highly recommend this book. Now I really can't wait for City of Heavenly Fire that's coming out in 2014! *sigh* That's two more years! In the meantime, I'm going to re-read the whole series. Once you have entered the world of Shadowhunters, you won't be able to let go! By the way, have you seen the trailer? It gave me Goosebumps!
