New York City is in the midst of pizza price war. Not only is the city flooded with chain pizza restaurants like Dominos and Pizza Hut but many local pizzerias are offering slices for $1 or even $0.75. This is big deal news for fans of pizza, though fans of high quality food are not thrilled.
For those of us who grew up in New York in the 1990s and saw the price of pizza rise from $1.25 dollars to $3 the market being flooded with cheap pizza was a good thing. The problem is that this intense undercutting has muscled many pizzerias out of business. It seems the only two options left are expensive sit down pizzerias or $1 stands (which often cut cost by using frozen crusts and other less tasty ingredients). Long gone are the days of great pizza for about $2 a slice.
Some of the larger chains are attempting to compete with this influx of scrappy upstarts. Little Caesar's offers a large pizza pie for $5 but it verges on the inedible. You're better off buying frozen pizzas. Dominos offers similar bargains but they usually have a lot of restrictions (carry out only, not available on certain days).
